Hallo, ladies and germs. I'm a dancer of all sorts looking to get into stilting. This thread has been a plethora of useful information. Does anyone have any great books, links, tips, or tricks about stilting?

Furthermore, does anyone know of a place in the midwest that offers lessons?

Honestly there is not much literature out there.
Stilt walking is not actually that hard so really the best thing you can do for yourself is get some stilt find a friend to help and just go for it. After that it is just practice.

yeah, what blueberry said. :) you might think it's hard at first, but the learning curve is surprisingly short.

having now taught a lot of people to stilt, i was waaaay on the bottom end of the curve: i spent about 20 minutes terrified out of my mind, with two tall walking sticks for support and a crash mat to bail onto and spotters... then about 2 hours slowly and clumsily making my way around with one staff for support... then i slung the staff over my shoulder and walked two miles without stumbling or falling. most people take much less time than i did to get comfortable, and a few just strap on the stilts, stand up, go "huh," and start running.

so i think the hardest part is getting stilts. i'd recommend getting one or two strong spotters to help you for the very beginning, and a sturdy 8' long stick (maybe a 2x2 from a lumber yard) for just after the very beginning, just in case. and starting on grass.

keep your chest up and look straight ahead of you; keep your feet moving; pick your knees up more than you expect. in short, pretend you're marching. that'll give you the balance. you have to keep taking steps; you can't stand still, so take *lots* of steps.

soon, once your brain figures out how to map this onto regular walking, try every dance trick you know on stilts. :) that'll give you *superb* balance. :)

good luck! i hope this is of some use.
